MADISON — Two little girls were determined to raise money to buy fidget toys, but ended up giving half the money to a neighbor battling cancer.

“Me and she are obsessed with fidgeting, so we had a lemonade stand for them,” explains 10-year-old Jerzie Rodriguez. “Then my mom told me about Kelly and how she had cancer, so we decided to give half for her.”

Rodriguez and her boyfriend, 9-year-old Aubree Vargas, raised $111 in August through three lemonade stands on three different days.

The recipient of the money, Kelly Lembley, said it is just one example of how supportive the city of Madison has been to her.

“I saw them on Facebook and was impressed because it was a very hot day,” Lembley said with a hand on her heart. “I was just so impressed with their generosity. I had no idea it was so [for me.]”

Local businesses even helped run a fundraiser for her over the weekend.

“I love the city I live in,” Lembley said.

The girls plan to hold a bake sale to raise even more money for Lembley.
