FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A nonprofit organization takes action to fulfill a dream for a South Valley girl battling cancer.
In August 2020, Emily White took her 5-year-old to the doctor for abdominal pain, which she expected to be mild and easy to treat.
“They would help her get some relief and we would go home,” said Kenzie’s mother, Emily White.
But that day their lives took a drastic turn. Kenzie was diagnosed with stage 4, high-risk, metastatic neuroblastoma.
“As soon as he left, I called my husband, but I couldn’t speak.”
Emily quit her job to be with her daughter full time.
Kenzie has undergone surgeries, stem cell collections, transplants, and multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation.
“A 5-year-old shouldn’t be that strong, but she’s a phenomenally small person,” Emily said.
White says fighting this battle is hard enough and you’re in the middle of a pandemic, which only adds to the challenges. Her husband and 2 year old son support them virtually.
“We’re just looking forward to all being together,” Emily said.
They are also supported by the One At A Time non-profit campaign. The organization selected Kenzie to help fulfill her dream of visiting Disneyland.
“She’s invested in all these princesses now,” Emily said. “Half of her closet is dress up dresses, so it’s a dream of hers.”
The group launched a two-week campaign on August 14 to raise $5,000. The goal was reached within days, but now every extra dollar goes to children facing similar battles.
“We want to continue to spread Kenzie’s story to all other children battling cancer. We want to raise more money in the dream bank to help more children in Kenzie’s honor,” said OAAT West Director Nick Ortega.
White says she feels blessed by the abundant support and knows they must face this challenge day by day.
“This is just part of her story,” she says. “This is just one chapter, and we’re all going to get something out of this that leads to something bigger.”
Kenzie is currently at Valley Children’s and will be undergoing immunotherapy for another five months.
