Royersford Fire Dept. Event Will Aid Pediatric Cancer Nonprofit

ROYERSFORD, PA — A beer and beef fundraiser is underway for those who want to join the Royersford Fire Department in supporting families whose children have cancer.

September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, so the Royersford Fire Department selected Jake’s Dragon Foundation for its annual fundraiser for families in need affected by childhood cancer. They have planned a beer and beef fundraiser.

The event will be held at Stickman Brews in Royersford on September 18, starting at 4 p.m. and will last “’til they kick us out,” the department said in a message advertising the event.

Jake’s Dragon Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to funding innovative childhood cancer research and helping families cope with the enormous financial burden associated with a cancer diagnosis. It is a Founding Hope member of the American Childhood Cancer Organization.

RFD Community Relations Officer Adam Alberico said he and a founder of Jake’s Dragon Foundation each lost someone to childhood cancer. Sandy and Matt McHugh, who founded Jake’s Dragon, lost their teenage son Jake to cancer in 2018 and while Alberico worked with them to plan a fundraiser, he said his own son, at age 20, had cancer.

His son, Daniel, died on March 2, 2021 at the age of 21. Alberico said Stickman Brews asked about Daniel and came up with a beer for the event that represents Daniel’s favorite, with a specially designed label.

Tickets to support childhood cancer through Jake’s Dragons Foundation cost $40 per person, including food, live music, and two cans of beer.

The gold theme of this year’s fundraiser will be seen all over the city. There will be golden lights and banners all over the city reminding residents that RFD supports childhood cancer. “We want to raise a lot of money. From food to signage, everything is 100 percent donated by the community,” Alberico said.

He said that when the ministry was looking for a tent rental with chairs and tables, a local company stepped in and donated it.

Alberico said all proceeds from the event will be donated to Jake’s Dragon Foundation.

Each year, the fire service holds a fundraiser for a community organization. In the past, RFD has raised more than $7,000 for breast cancer awareness.
