Martha Heywood, seven, from Wellington has made her family proud by going for the pork chop and donating her luscious locks to the charity that makes wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment.

The Telford schoolgirl was inspired by watching a TV show with her family about children losing their hair due to cancer.

Martha, who has a sister and three brothers, wanted to help people who had lost their hair and had 40 cm cut in a Wellington salon, Pastels by Natalie.

Her mother, Kellie Cheshire, said she was emotional seeing Martha’s hair cut, but that she and Damien Heywood, Martha’s father, were so proud of her daughter.

“We watched a show on TV about kids going through leukemia and they watched it, Martha got pretty upset about all this and the fact that they lost their hair,” said Kellie.

“She asked if there was anything she could do to help, so we looked at it. I came across the Little Princess Trust and found that you can donate her to make wigs. We followed the charity for a while and let Martha see the process and she said she would love to do it.

“We are so proud of her – as a woman I can hardly imagine letting go of my hair, she is so brave. I think children are quite selfless. We have had a few family members with cancer and the word keeps coming up. back in our family. So it’s nice for her to do it, especially in a year of so much doom and gloom that it’s nice for someone to give something back. ”

It costs £ 550 to make a wig at The Little Princess Trust and the family has raised money and are almost on target.

Kellie added: “She’s only seven years old, it’s amazing of her. On the Little Princess Trust website they show you some kids who made wigs and it’s so lovely to think that Martha’s hair is in a wig changes for someone who needs it.

“The salon where she gets her hair cut, Pastels by Natalie, has just opened and it’s so beautiful there.”
